Survivors' Park History

August 30, 2004, 60 years after the liquidation of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto, 450 trees were planted by the Survivors. This way the Survivors’ Park symbolizes the victory of live over the death.

We created remembrance park of those who died and of those who survived. Our children and grandchildren will be coming here every time they visit Poland and Łódź - said Halina Elczewska – the Park’s initiator. The Park was established under the patronage of Mayor of Łódź Jerzy Kropiwnicki.

This place used to be a dumping ground but it has been cleared and will become one of the most beautiful green places in our city-  said mayor Kropiwnicki.

Every Ghetto Survivor will have their own tree. Every planted tree has its number and is registered with name of the Survivor.

My home is gone but I will have my tree growing here. This park will sooth anxiety of those who survived the ghetto - said one of the former Litzmannstadt Ghetto inmates. The Mayor of Łódź together with Halina Elczewska and Jehuda Widawski unveiled a monument commemorating tragic events of 1940-1944. There are inscriptions in four languages on the monument.

Survivors’ Park is situated at 83 Wojska Polskiego street. It covers 6 hectares adjacent to the area of the former ghetto. There are old birches and 200 year old oaks next to newly planted trees.

Personally I would like to thank all young people who helped us planting the trees and looked after us during our stay in Łódź - said touched Helen Colin from Texas (Survivor who spent 4 years in the ghetto and one year in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
